How to get historical account data correctly imported

If I understand you correctly I suspect it is just the initial balance
that is wrong.  Work out how much you want the current balance
corrected by and add an extra transaction at the earliest date from an
Equity account to the account of that amount and the balances will
adjust all the way through.  Alternatively if you already have an
Opening Balance transaction just change that by the appropriate
amount.
