I agree.  I've used an accounting system which had, at it's core, a basic
double-entry accounting system with a general ledger and ability to create
a chart of accounts and view accounts.  Built on top of that were a
receivables system, a payables system​, and all sorts of other systems
which maintained their own journals.  However, at the core was this
accounting system.
