One additional comment.  Your original question included the word
automatic.  GnuCash does not retrieve quotes automatically.  It is
necessary to manually go into the stock price editor and click on 'Get
Quotes'.  I believe the reasoning for this is that a data file could get
bloated with useless data if it were automated. 

As it is, it is difficult to purge old price data selectively leaving
monthly or quarterly prices for historical reports.
