Split gnucash sqlite database

It is that time of year again, and I am looking at splitting (at
2014-01-01) my gnucash database, which is in sqlite format. Why?

1. size
2. lose old accounts that have been long closed
3. easier tracking of a particular time frame

Last year, I did it by hand, but this ought to be scriptable. Has
anyone done this yet?

If not, would anyone else be interested in the finished script? I'm
thinking python, as it is ubiquitous and sqlite3 bindings are built
in.
