FX entry question

Dear GnuCash Users,

Let me summarise my question with the FX Rate field in the FX dialogue box.

I have seen unusual display of factions or combination, like 4/375 or 7 + 309/456, in the FX field in the FX dialogue box for transaction involving “Transfer” to an a/c of USD Currency. Reporting Currency is HKD. But, the grey Confirmation FX box, next to the first FX field is showing the exact input, like 7.75 or 7.74631.

This error in FX is seen repeating itself in the Report-> Balance Sheet. The 1st column, which did not specify what currency, has a total sum not exactly equal to the 2nd column times the FX Rate.

1st Column    2nd Column                                          1st Col.       2nd Col.
103,100     -> 123,456       Instead it should show 103,100 -> 799,025 (USD:HKD=1:7.75)

All the Accounts in GnuCash, which I had set the Currency/Security to USD, like a USD Time Loan, USD C/A, USD Cash A/C – all show uncorrelated FX amount.

This repeats itself in 3 levels. First, in the Registry, where it does not show the opposite transaction in a HKD:USD FX buy/sell. I did tried and input from the other way round, with HKD first, then USD. But, still doesn’t show the opposite entry.

Second, the FX dialogue box shows the FX in grey as a correct display of the FX rate as I had input. But, the actual FX field, in white box, is showing truncated sets of numbers, which I have no clue what it mean to say.

Thirdly, in the Balance Sheet, the 1st Column does not equal 7.75 times to get the 2nd column, which is the Report Currency.

Though 2 GnuCash users has tried to help me on this in the IRC Chat (Internet Relay Chat), there is no conclusive answers what I should input to get the FX transaction right.

So, I will just have to wait until a GnuCash user, who has experienced and do succeeded in inputing an FX, to share with me how to input an FX.

Cheers,
Joan

Subject: FX entry question

Dear GnuCash Users,

(also posted this question in the GnuCash IRC Chat):

I have an FX transaction buy HKD sold USD. I entered first in the USD a/c. Since, the Reporting Currency is HKD, I input the FX 7.74 in the FX dialogue box. I entered the Transfer A/C to the HKD a/c. But, it multiplies the Amount 4x (four times). There isn't any simple straight screen snapshot illustration to teach user how to enter FX transaction. Maybe, it overlooked the fact that FX is the core concept in Investments and others. Another strange things happens, I couldn't see the opposite HKD transaction under the HKD a/c list of transaction. I had deleted the USD entry, trying to start from scratch. But didn't make the HKD reappear.

With best wishes,
