Just a note. While the built in business features of gnucash can be a 
great help automating the process, books had been kept on the accrual 
basis even in the days of pen and ink on paper accounting, long before 
anybody dreamed of computers. So yes of course, you CAN do it "manually" 
and this is what you would probably choose to do IF your business, 
although books kept on the accrual basis, did very little invoicing in 
the sense we usually mean that term (if only a couple customers didn't 
have to pay immediately).
