YES, only use the version that your Linux distribution install for you.  I was a Quickbooks users before anyone you know - as a personal friend of the owner of Intuit provided us with with Quickbooks before it was released for sale - that was over 30 years ago.  I practiced with GNU Cash on my own and that experience has allowed me to use GNU Cash without ever asking for help.   This help section (for me) has been 100% useless.


HINT:  Once you install GNU Cash make a folder titled Gnucash. Place your working file in it.  That way all the archived version of the file you are using will all be stored in one convenient place.

Almost every linux distribution has Gnucash in its repository.  It *should* be 
just a matter of 'sudo apt-get install gnucash' or 'sudo yum install gnucash'. 
Which distribution do you have?
