Can't resize window

I can't tell if this will work for your situation or not, but have you 
tried using the keyboard to resize the window horizontally?  E.g. 
something like:

ALT+SPACE .. "S" .. RIGHT-ARROW .. LEFT-ARROW-UNTIL-YOU-SEE-THE-EDGE
