getting accounts to show today's balance

When I open gnucash my accounts show the balance of each account to include
all entries, including future debits and credits which I've entered to keep
tabs on my future finances. BUT I want "today's" balances to show in the
opening list, not future amounts. I can't see how to set this preference.
Can it be done?
