Unable to Retrieve Quotes

I am just getting started with GnuCash after having used Quicken for 
some 8 years (yuck) and Financial Navigator before that for some 12 
years or more (a good program but very expensive with its a la carte 
pricing especially with the automatic download modules and limitations 
to a single user and a single computer).

I think I have everything set up right per "Chapter 8" of the 
documentation but when I go Tools>Price-Editory>Get-Quotes  I get the 
message "Unable to retrieve quotes for these items:" followed by a list 
of the securities for which quotes were sought in the format 
Exchange:Ticker.  At the moment I have set up some 16 securities traded 
on either NYSE or NASDAQ for quote retrieval but at the moment only show 
purchases and share balances for two of the securities.  Those 
securities are included in the unable to retrieve list.

I am running Win 7 Professional, SP1, 64 bit Operating System. 
ActivePerl has been installed and "Update Finance Quote" app has been run.

What am I doing wrong?
