I suspect that "power email users" of many FOSS systems like GnuCash enjoy
the built-in "noob filtering" of the mail-list medium.

I recognize that using a google group would "violate the principles" of
those who emphasize the view of FOSS as a social/political movement rather
than coming from a pragmatic POV.

However there are many FOSS tools that enable more user-friendly topic
discussions

One I particularly admire is http://www.discourse.org/
