download and install gnucash on iMac OSX

Eldon,

As a fellow Mac user, I will start by saying that GnuCash most certainly works on the Mac.

I also have to say I do not understand the part where you say: "And then it connects to the web and downloads a bunch of stuff and says it is loading local files.”

I didn’t have this experience; when I double-clicked on Gnucash for the first time (lo these many years ago!) in the Applications folder, I got Apple’s confirmation dialog (like you did), but then GnuCash just started up. There was no further downloading. So, could you explain this part in a little more detail?

As for the error message you cite, it may be that GnuCash is remembering the fact that you first ran it from the disk image (dmg file), which would likely be a read-only location. (GnuCash defaults to opening the last file you accessed). That would explain this error. You can test this by closing the error dialog and then selecting File->New, creating a completely new GC file, and saving it in your home folder. Closing and reopening GC would then cause this new (correctly-placed) file to open by default. See if that helps.
