How can I add Account Codes and Descriptions of the Accounts to the Profit and Loss sheet?

if you want to look but not touch
\gnucash\share\gnucash\scm\gnucash\report\standard-reports\income-stateme
nt.scm
if you are sure you want to change it ask again as I can't recall the
exact procedure for where you have to copy it too before playing with it
offhand.

Not likely to happen for two reasons:
1) longer term scheme won't be used for reports so no-one is doing much
work on them
2) gnc regards account codes a bit like earlobes, you can look at them
but they don't do much; in fact gnc functions perfectly well without
them at all.
Having said all that I'm sure someone must have done this before so a
good trawl through the list archives and website might reveal some
previously done work.
Also if you are OK with SQL then I and a number of other people could
provide you with a basic P&L script and you could include your codes in
that.
