When you click on the "accounts" tab, what happens? Don't you get a view
of your chart of accounts allowing you to select your checking account?
(to be opened)

When you close an account, the tab disappears, and won't be present
until you open the account again. The tab will stay there as long as you
have the account open but not when you close it. Imagine what would
happen if gnucash left a tab there for every account you had ever
opened. You have 50 accounts or more? How useful would a tab bar be with
50 tabs on it?
