My attempts lead to a "verifying "gnucash" process after which the gnu cash icon flashes in the dock and the warning appears "this is an application downloaded from the internet, do you want to open it?". When I click on "open", the flashing icon in the dock disappears and all is dead. I really want to try this software; it sounds like it is close to the old version of Quicken which was great but no longer supported by MAC Mt Lion. Hope someone can help me open this application. Thanks

Did you drag Gnucash from the dmg to your Applications folder?
If you did, please open Applications:Utilities:Console. Open the file list if it isn’t already (there’s a button on the left end of the toolbar) and see if there’s a Gnucash entry under User Diagnostic Reports. If there is, drag it to a reply (remember to copy the list!) and send it in.
That aside, GnuCash is unlike any version of Quicken. GnuCash uses and enforces double-entry accounting and uses sub accounts instead of categories. We recommend that you study the Tutorial and Concepts Guide, available in the application or at www.gnucash.org, before you dive in to GnuCash.
