Sounds like you are trying to mimic a deposit slip that has a list of
checks (cheques) on the back.  I can tell you that is not easy to do the
first time, but it is definitely possible.  Some users, myself included,
have  tried that and found trade-off issues with searches and reports
and even reconciliation issues that suggest that is not the best way to
do it for their particular workflow requirements.  I would suggest to
temporarily abandon it this week and make individual deposit
transactions.  When you have time to play, go back and re-read the
second answer from Colin, particularly this sentence: 

When entering split transactions I start (before splitting)
by entering the total amount in the top line, then clicking split,
that automatically enters that amount against the current account.

You can also experiment with opening your bank account register in
View>Auto split Ledger or Transaction Journal and try checking the
double line box.  I needed to understand what those settings did before
I was able to understand how splits worked.
