file won't open

Where is the device or medium on which you make your periodic data 
backups? This is a business, right? So surely on a periodic basis you 
back up the data of all business computers. If not, then your problem is 
NOT just with gnucash (unless that is the only business activity the 
computer was used for).

When your computer fails, and fail it someday will, you either replace 
the computer (or the OS if this is a "soft" problem), reinstall 
applications (programs), and restore your data from backup. Then what 
you lost just the data between the last backup and the disaster. Every 
business needs a "disaster-recovery" plan.

BTW, if you are coming back with the same operating system, the restore 
of data form backup easy, simply copy over corresponding directories 
(file folders). If the new OS is different, well you might need some 
help learning what now goes where.
