I'm glad you've solved your problem, but I'm very doubtful of your

... is without doubt an *application* error. In my opinion, based on
considerable experience, the application has not the slightest shred of
a clue about whether or not it's running in a Virtual Box, so you should
discount that idea.
As for whether the application cares which Linux distro it's running in,
that I also doubt.
What is more likely (IMO) is that the level of GnuCash which you had
obtained to run in OpenSUSE was in some way damaged or down-level or
something (or perhaps it was one of the libraries that GnuCash uses).
Anyway, you have it running and that's what matters.
