It is going to be SIMPLER for you to use separate books.
You would have to be more experienced with double entry bookkeeping to 
do it "partitioned" within a single set of books. That is why I did not 
go into HOW to continue the way you started. It was pretty obvious to me 
the sort of mistake you were making to end up with zero in "partner 
contributions" but that this was a fundamentals of double entry problem, 
not a gnucash problem << except that at this point I don't think you are 
up to split transactions that are split on both sides >>
