Install upgrade from 2.6.1 to any other verison fails

Ok, I have done a little more work on this and I believe I have narrowed
down the issue to the following:

I can now install gnucash 2.6.11 however, you may notice I did not use
the word successfully.

Here is the issue. No matter what I do, I cannot uninstall gnucash 2.6.1
even though the utilities all say it is not installed. It is not listed
in the Unbuntu Software Centre, the package is not listed in the
Synaptic Package Manager but when I launch gnucash, it comes up
successfully as 2.6.1 (and still behaves at 2.6.1) whether 2.6.11 is
installed or not.

I know this sounds weird but this is what is happening. Now, I have no
idea if the Ubuntu Software Centre is improperly reporting a successful
install or what is happening but 2.6.1 will continue to launch and bring
up my books successfully no matter whether 2.6.11 is installed or not.

What I want to put out there is that I believe I need to be able to
manually uninstall 2.6.1 in order to successfully install 2.6.11. I have
tried installs with deb package (dpkg, gdebi and apt-get). There may be
a parameter you can suggest for any of these commands that might make
this work for me but I don't see it myself. Would, for instance, me
deleting /usr/local/bin/gnucash and then reinstalling 2.6.11 work? Any
assistance would be appreciated.

Again, I am very happy with 2.6.1 except for the fact that I cannot
adjust the columns on the right hand side so I cannot see the entire
total amounts when working on my books. At any rate, I would like to be
able to update the app like most other users seems to be able to do.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you could provide me. Anyone else
run into this situation?

-Neal
