No, I don't think you are missing anything.

It looks like an uncomplicated SQL query to me so python would probably be
overkill unless you are very familiar with it.  Also be aware that if you
are on a Win platform building GnuCash with a working python interface is
something of a challenge (i.e. I don't know if it can be done reliably).

If you want help with the SQL ask, a number of people have shown interest
recently.
