Hello Don and Dave,

Thanks for the prompt response to my question. Couldn’t respond earlier due to a Conference.

Don,

The first entry (Opening Balance) in the Transfer column shows as Equity:ABC Bank. All other entries show as Assets:XXXX. These entries are for subaccounts under Assets. The first entry (Opening Balance) under Equity account shows up as Assets.

Dave,

Yes, I can change the headings to whatever I want. I am not looking to change the headings. I can work with either heading pair deposit/Withdrawal on increase/decrease.

The purpose of submitting my question was more to make sure that I am not making a mistake somewhere

I am running into another related issue for which I’ll start a new thread.

Thanks,

Suresh

Suresh,
You could try going to Edit >> Preferences >> Accounts and toggling the "Use formal accounting labels" setting, this changes my column headers (Gnucash 2.6.12 on Windows 7) from Deposit/Withdrawal or Increase/Decrease (Equity Account) to Debit/Credit.
Cheers Dave H

I don't have gnuCash open to look at it but I believe it depends on the type of account the transaction is talking about.
An EXPENSE or ASSET account doesn't have 'deposits' & 'withdrawals'. It has 'increases' & 'decreases' but a bank account has 'deposits' & 'withdrawals'. I'm not talking about whether the account is a sub-account of assets or not. But the actual account TYPE.

Hello,

Pardon me for asking this. I am new to GnuCash.

Pages 41 -42 (Simple Transaction Example) of the current
documentation (first copyright line is Copyright C 2009-20156 GnuCash
Documentation Team) shows the transaction headings as "Deposit" and
"Withdrawal". However, GnuCash 2.6.12 shows the headings as "Increase" and
"Decrease".

Of course, a deposit increases, while withdrawal decreases
Equity. So, they are both the same.

I just want to be sure that I am not on the wrong screen or
doing something wrong.

Thanks,

Suresh Bazaj
