Not able to save start date and end date in edit preferences - anyone see this before?

Hi,

I am just starting to use gnucash. I am doing one file per fiscal year. 
On my first time transitioning to new year, I am finding that when using 
the new year file, and I try to change the start date and end date in 
edit -> preferences, it does not save the values I enter. Re-opening the 
dialog shows the old values, and reports are using the old values. The 
old values were set when I was working on the old year.

Just wondering if anyone had this issue and if so what they did about it.
