Not able to save start date and end date in edit preferences - anyone see this before?

I'll repeat what I told you on your bug report: Accounting Period dates are Preferences rather than File Properites, so they apply to all files. There's an old request [1] to change that, but so far no-one has taken it on.

The best thing you can do for now is to create  "saved configurations" for your annual reports for each year by running the report, changing the dates, and clicking the "Save Report Configuration As..." button in the toolbar. Give each a name like "Balance Sheet 2016". You can then run them again from the Reports>Saved Configurations window.
