Changing the right-most column width

Yes, I've read the Wiki FAQ 4.17, and understand that:

 1. Double-clicking the column header resizes the column to hold the
    widest value.
 2. I can drag the right border of any column header to resize the
column manually, EXCEPT for the description column (that's OK), and
EXCEPT for the right-hand column (typically the balance; that's NOT OK).

Doing #2 with the right-hand column appears to just resize the
description column.

The only way I have found to resize the right-hand column (the balance)
to a larger width than all the current numbers in that column (eg, for
readability), is to create a transaction with a large enough amount,
double-click the column header to get the desired size, and then delete
the transaction.

If there's a better way, I'm all ears.

System: Windows 10, v2.6.14.

When I first went to v2.6, I found the above so disgusting that I went
back to 2.4, but alas, I needed the new features in Scheduled
Transactions, so I've been back with v2.6 for a couple years.

My guess is that, with the GUI package you are using, there are
complexities of support/compatibility with multiple platforms, so you
are stuck with it for the time being.

A year ago I investigated where the column widths are stored, and it
appeared very easy to write a script to apply fixed sizes to almost all
columns in all transaction registers. I just haven't gotten around to it.
