In QB, I handled this problem with a naming convention, because an individual might be both a donor and a customer. The convention was preceding the name with a “p” for purchaser and a “d” for donor. So when Jane Moe donates, she donates under the name “d Jane Moe” and when she purchases something, her name is recorded as “p Jane Moe”. Again, a bit cumbersome to do when you receive money, but it keeps the paper trail straight for reporting purposes.

There are a couple of books on using QB for nonprofits, many of the ideas in them are transferrable to gnucash.
