GNUCash file size grew nearly 14 times

I am not a developer.
I do not know about whether Google Drive or insync are factors in your
problem or not but an easy way to eliminate GnuCash is to first check the
Edit > Preferences > General > Files > Compress files box to be sure that
it is still checked. If it is, then use GZip, 7Zip or your favorite
compression utility to attempt to open your data file. If it is correctly
compressed it will report two file sizes, actual and compressed. If that
gives abnormal results it is more likely not GnuCash that is causing your
problem.
I suspect that Google Drive may also be copying the backup files, which
will quickly become a major problem.
