I've been running GC on Windows and Linux for over 20 years and never noticed any real issues in migrating data. I use MySQL for the backend, but the GUI seems to be what you are having an issue with and that's always been pretty much the same.I access my accounts from "Accounts". Everything is there. I rely on the pulldowns as I enter splits and they open the same accounts hierarchy.
If you've been making entries into GC, doesn't that mean you have access to your accounts database? Perhaps you lost your database integrity, but to me that would just mean you are mistyping things.
I'm currently looking at gc 2.6.15 on Ubuntu 17.04 (my Windows 10 machine is sleeping at the moment and I don't want to wake it, but it's running the same version gc and even if it weren't, it would be accessing the same MySQL database on my Linux server, except I don't do concurrent access to avoid inconsistencies. I do run a slave MySQL server on the Windows 10 machine, but that's not relevant to this thread.).
How did you import your gc data to the new machine? You didn't just copy the XML thing over and point to it?

Subject: Help Importing from 2.6.0 (GnuCash) running on Windows XP to 2.6.16 (GnuCash) running on Windows 10
Purchased a new computer on Windows 10. Downloaded 2.6.16 and then imported all data from XP 2.6.0 computer to the new computer and Version of GnuCash. I can make entries into GnuCash, except that when I try to enter ANY account name, it says, “account not found; do you wish to create an account?”
Is there incompatibility going on or a problem in how I tried to make the transition from XP and 2.6.0 to Windows 10 and 2.6.16?
Thank you in advance for any Help!
