having trouble starting

Hi, installed gnucash ver. 2.6.1  on Ubuntu 14.04  64 bit.
Seems like it installed OK.  On starting it,  splash screen appears, tip 
of the day,  then blank screen comes up with 2 buttons on top,  "Save" 
and "Close".  Certainly not the "Welcome to GnuCash" dialog that is 
supposed to appear.  Went to Software Centre and did remove / install.  
Same thing happens. So now, I am a bit stuck.    Thanks in advance for 
any help.
