This is a "fundamentals of double entry bookkeeping" matter. While a 
"balance" amount could be negative, "balance"  was not part of original 
double entry bookkeeping.

I am not going to address why you might be seeing a signum in front of 
numbers, just suggest you reread the basics, whether using the tutorial 
or some other "introduction to double entry bookkeeping". The whole 
point of debit vs credit is that negative numbers not needed and the 
only operation of traditional bookkeeping was addition << remember, 
negative numbers weren't much in use yet several hundred years ago>>

Yes of course, debit and credit have the opposite sense, just like plus 
and minus do. But if you think of debit meaning the same as plus and 
credit the same as minus, you are going to have trouble understanding 
things like "then how can an expense account normally have a debit 
balance?".
