Continuing to flog a deceased equine, I will offer the thought that OSS in
inherently 'safer' than proprietary software because everyone can examine
the source code and qualified people can assess its robustness and security.
More practically, examination of source code can be vital to correct use of
the application.

A couple of examples are spatial and statistical analysis software. Being
able to examine the mathematical models used, and the model's data
assumptions, permits choice of the model most appropriate for a data set.
Examination of Excel's formula for annuity calculations showed me that it
was appropriate for calculating net present value of interest gained, but
not of interest paid (confirmed by a local university finance professor).
