Why don't Account Totals respect Accounting Period End?

The Grand Total at the bottom of the Accounts page does change as you
modify the Accounting Period End Date, but the numbers listed in the Total
column of the Account list don't change.

Is there some reasoning behind why those Totals shouldn't be matched with
End Date?  Or is this room for improvement?
