[GNC] Budget Issue

Peter,

I only reply to the list, never an individual. (It’s considered bad form to send PM’s unless agreed upon, also, others don’t get to benefit from the discussion - this is covered in the wiki discussing the mailing list.)

Since you unsubscribed, I’m copying you this one time, but I’d prefer to discuss the topic on-list. (not the least reason, that I filter my list mail so I can see it easier and your personal replies get jumbled into my other mail. This makes it more difficult to see if I need to reply back.)

Yes, you are possibly going to get lots of e-mails from the list. That’s because this is a world-wide list. Sometimes it is rather quiet, sometimes not. Just delete the messages you aren’t interested in, or if you’re simply getting too many e-mails, you can switch to digest mode so you only get one per day, but that will change your workflow with replies depending on your mail client software. You can also remain subscribed but suspend message delivery. You’ll have to go to the archives though to see if someone posted a reply to your own threads in that case.

I’m copying my earlier reply below:

----------

Both unused accounts, parent and child, allowed me to enter values.

Is it just that you are seeing “0.00” for Expenses:Auto but not seeing anything for Expenses:Auto:Licensing, or can you not double-click where the cell is supposed to be and enter any value at all?

Note, Parent accounts will default to showing “0.00”, but child accounts are just empty. You shouldn’t generally enter budget amounts for parent accounts. If you only enter the child account amounts, you’ll see that the parent takes on their sum as its value. (hence why they all start off “0.00” as the sum is already calculated and displayed, but at this point is zero) This also falls in line with the ‘best practice’ that parent accounts should be placeholders only and should not contain their own transactions.

If it helps to see cells better you can turn on grid lines. (unfortunately, for the whole app, not just the Budget module)

Preferences > General >

Enable horizontal grid lines on table displays
Enable vertical grid lines on table displays

These are supposed to update in real time as you check/uncheck them, but there seems to be a bug. After changing the preference, close the preferences window and then close and re-open the budget. You’ll see the desired grid lines.

Regards,
Adrien
