[GNC] file save over network taking very long time

The storage and the program are on the same pc. I am xterm'ing in from
outside the lan. the program itself , the gui, seems responsive, it's only
when i go to save, and i see the progress bar/ring doing it's thing - seems
to slow down. I watch the storage, and the file size creeps up.
