Maybe I am misunderstanding, but I just tried it. I entered e (for
expenses) : (colon) L (first letter of an expense placeholder account) :
(colon) and then used the up and down arrows to navigate through the items
on the list. On this Ubuntu 19.10 system running GnuCash 3.8, the "pop-up"
list of accounts visible was about as tall as the "active" area of the
register window, so I could see quite a few as I scrolled through the
accounts.
