Alan,

If you follow this group then someone, usually John Rails sends out a post. The one for Version 3.9 was sent on 30th December 2019. There's also a gnucash-announce group just for such announcements.

Thanks. I did not realize there had been updates (do we get some sort of 
notification?), but now I have Version 3.8 Build ID: 3.8b+(2019-12-29). 
As you postulated, it now works as it should.
