[GNC] Default View: Menu entry and tooltip

Okay, I see now we could be discussing two different places in the GUI.


First, there is View > Double Line as a menu entry.

I don’t see a tooltip (or change in the StatusBar) when I hover this entry. There’s no indication of what it does, from within the app.

Under Guide "§2.3.8 Menu Items”, info there suggests hovering a menu entry will provide a description of that menu entry in the Statusbar but I don’t see any thing happening in the Statusbar as I hover over each menu item. (even with a long delay or going back and forth)

Was this removed and the docs not updated? Is something wrong with my installation?



Then there is Preferences > Register Defaults > Other defaults > Double line mode, which *does* have the following tooltip:

"Show two lines of information for each transaction instead of one. Does not affect expanded transactions.”

This certainly can be improved, though perhaps rewording the option (and menu entry) would help in both cases.

If that change isn’t made, the tooltip can still be improved.

In addition to adding info about Notes and Attachments (thanks Geert, I forgot about that), the second sentence (fragment) doesn’t seem to make much sense, or is outdated.

I tried various combos of view options and this option works at all times. I can’t find a case where having it on, follows ’not affecting expanded transactions’.

So perhaps that too needs to be changed or removed.

I’m about to setup a build environment for documentation and attempt the PRs necessary for these labeling/tip-text changes in time for string freeze.

I’ll file bugs accordingly, and unless someone chimes in about the issue with the Statusbar or the ‘expanded transaction’ issue, I’ll file bugs on those too.

I also discovered some broken links between Help & Guide with reference to ‘Choosing a Register Style’. That will get another bug if it isn’t already there.
