It explains many points regarding gnucash and its implementations of the database back end. It explains the dbms that are supported (postgresql is among them) as well as the limitations to the current implementation.

I do not  know if Gnucash can run with postgreSQL, but if it can, 
perhaps that would be a better relational dbms to use?
