Arthur,

When you start GnuCash it displays an Accounts tab which should display your
chart of accounts. If you double click (or right click on the account name and
select Open Account from the popup menu) on the name of the account whose
register you wish to open (e.g. Account Receivable, it will open a list of
transactions that have entries to that account in date order by default.
Normally these are displayed as a summary entry of the effect of the transaction
on that account.

If from the menu you select View->Auto Split Ledger, when you select(click on a
transaction in that register ,it will display the transaction as two (or more in
some case) lines. One of these lines will have a debit or credit entry to the
account register you have open (e.g Accounts Receivable or an asset sub account
of it as Adrien recommended). The second line of the transaction will have a
credit or debit to another account e.g (Equity:Opening Balances) in the
unlabelled column to the right of the description field in which the register
that the split affects is defined. That is what the shorthand description of the
transaction I gave refers to.

These lines are referred to as the transaction splits. There must be at least
two associated with each transaction with the sum of the debit and credit entry
being zero. Transactions can have more than two such splits and in that case the
sum of the debit entries must equal the sum of the credit entries.

This is a fundamental part of professional double entry accounting (many
software packages hide this aspect of double entry accounting from the user) and
is discussed briefly in the Basics Chapter of the Tutorial and Concepts guide
https://www.gnucash.org/docs/v4/C/gnucash-guide/index.html. If you Google the
Wikipedia articles on Double Entry accounting and Debits and Credits and the
accounting equation you may get a more complete picture. It will be difficult to
use GnuCash unless you grasp the basics of double entry accounting.

The Help manual https://www.gnucash.org/docs/v4/C/gnucash-help/help.html gives a
description of the various interfaces and their operation.
