[GNC] How To Put Opening Balance in Acc Rev Account?5

I couldn't find a register to enter anything into. And I don't know what 'splits' are.
So I entered in the acc. rec. account I made for him.  I took a punt and entered -184 and it accepted it. Then I put in a 'payment' of 220 and it showed me a balance in red of  -34 which is fine.
that original 182 is not in red though.  not that I give a damn.
I see no way to get a statement of account from it though.  I tried 'report account' and it said there was nothing it could do.
:)

Hi Kerwin

I am glad to hear that your previous issue has been resolved.

As I understand it, your current issue is that GnuCash cannot retrieve
prices when you run it from the command line.

Because you have so many different versions of Perl installed on your
computer, my conjecture is that GnuCash is picking up a different
version of Perl than the one where you installed Finance::Quote.  This
is why I asked you to run the SET PATH command, but you have not done this.

Also, you appear to be running Windows in a non-standard way with the
\Program Files (x86)\ directory located on the D: drive and not the
usual C: drive.  I am not saying that this is the cause of the problem,
but it could be an additional factor.

Now, in your example below, you have introduced two more complications:
(1) Running GnuCash from the command line
(2) Using a GnuCash data store hosted remotely on OneDrive

There may be other explanations for your problem, and other readers on
this list may suggest alternative solutions.

My advice is to keep it simple and go back to the basics with your
troubleshooting:
(a) Completely remove *all* the versions of Perl on your computer
  (i) Uninstall using Windows Control Panel
(ii) Use File Explorer to delete any remaining Perl folders
  (iii) Reboot your computer
(b) Make sure you are running the latest version of GnuCash (4.9)
(c) Install the latest version of Strawberry Perl for Windows
(d) Install the latest Finance::Quote module
(e) Test Finance::Quote from a Windows Command Prompt (not a mingw or
any other shell) using gnc-fq-dump
(f) Use a local GnuCash data store on your C: drive.
(g) Invoke GnuCash via Windows, not the command line

Good luck!

Geoff

Hi Kerwin

You appear to have 2, or possibly 3, versions of Perl installed - is that for a specific reason?

(1) An Activestate installation - what are the contents of your perl.bat file?

(2) One or two mingw versions in slightly different locations - why?

You need to determine which version of Perl that GnuCash is seeing when it runs - from a *WINDOWS* Command prompt (not a mingw shell) type in "SET PATH"

Regards

Geoff

The issues might be clearer if you stepped back a bit. You have the
IRA/401k in your books as an asset. HOW did this amount get there? What
were all the parts of THOSE transactions? Hint: do your books include a
"deferred income" (say under equity). If not, how did you enter the
transactions of a contribution? (not just a transfer between assets but
also in the same amount a transfer between income and deferred income).
And how did you record the market increases of the IRA/401K except as a
debit to the 401k and a credit to "deferred income".

That's why some of us would NOT choose to have the 401k on our books as
an asset. It's a "right" (to NOT receive income now but instead to
receive it plus whatever it has earned over time at some later date). I
think what has you confused is that it seems to have a clear "amount"
associated with it so let's shift to a different sort of asset that is a
right, an annuity.

Its book value? That whatever you paid for it. That stays the same until
the annuity is no longer in effect under the terms of the contract.
Whoever is then keeping your books (winding them up) would write it off
against equity just like any other "loss" that is is not first processed
through expenses. Meanwhile it is a source of "rents" (series of
scheduled payments) that are debits to cash and credits to income as
received. Not transfers from the "value" of the annuity which best
remains unchanged.

Returning to your IRA/410k problem where you DO have it on your books as
an asset with defined value. I suspect that was opening books with
"starting values" but not having an account for "deferred income" (would
have been for the same amount, opposite sense, since you say 100% before
tax money? it's all deferred income). You can fix that (split that
amount off from starting equity to a "deferred" account under equity.
Now your distribution transaction can work (debit both cash and deferred
income and credit IRA and income -- all the amount of the distribution)

I've opened an account receivable account for my rental place.? The tenant is in credit.? He's overpaid.? I need to open it with that balance.? I don't seem to be able to put in an opening balance at all.
What to do?
:)

Hi Kerwin

You appear to have 2, or possibly 3, versions of Perl installed - is
that for a specific reason?

(1) An Activestate installation - what are the contents of your perl.bat
file?

(2) One or two mingw versions in slightly different locations - why?

You need to determine which version of Perl that GnuCash is seeing when
it runs - from a *WINDOWS* Command prompt (not a mingw shell) type in
"SET PATH"

Regards

Geoff

Arthur,

The Accounts Receivable account is an asset account which means it is debited to increase its balance and credited to decrease its balance. You want to it to have a negative balance by the amount your tenant is in credit.
Manually nter a transaction at the date you opened the books with the following
entries/splits to create the negative opening balance xxx. You can do this
either from the Acounts Receivable or the Opening balances register.

Asset:Accounts Recievable    Credit xxx
Equity:Opening Balances      Debit  xxx
