[GNC] Gnu Cash / UNrealised Losses in Trial balance

Thank you.
I have tried “scoping’’ the trial balance report on various accounts and date ranges, and found out :
= The ‘unrealised losses’ figure is showing significant jumps on the days where the EUR/USD pricing is being changed significantly (as we know EUR/USD rate has been quite variable in the last period.
= When restricting the trial balance report to only the “EUR Bank Account”, it is showing Unrealised losses with almost the same figure as for the entire Trial Balance.

So I am concluding thisis simply the losses I am incurring because of the EUR devaluation with respect to the USD.
And that should the EUR/USD rate increase back again to say 1.2 these losses would disappear (if I keep the Euros in Euros and not trade them for USD, of course).

Would the above make any sense?

Thanks for all the help, really appreciated

You are on the right track. The unrealized losses probably came from some transaction involving another currency exchange with your primary currency or, as Derek hinted, two or more transactions involving a security or other commodity. You can adjust the date range of the report to narrow down the group of transactions to search for the source of the issue. To eliminate the loss you would need to add a transaction to convert the unrealized loss to a realized loss. Others here can give specific advice once you have found the offending transactions.

Thank you,

In my case, this seems to be related to the EUR/USD rate.
When I print a trial Balance, and I change which rate to use "Nearest in time, Last recorded price, etc.." this figure (UNrealised losses) is changing. I do not have inventory.

So I feel this is "Difference of Exchange" . Is my understanding correct?

Thanks,

EE

You buy 10 widgets at $10 each.
You sell 5 widgets at $15 each.

You need to account for that (realized) gain.

Now the widget price increases to $20 each. That would be unrealized gain..
