I use inventory in QuickBooks for farming which is both painless and
surprisingly handy.

shows GnuCash can handle inventory but it is not properly documented.
Interestingly before the above quote the linked tutorial has a link to
https://www.manager.io/ which is a well regarded fully featured free
accounting package with inventory.
