The Dropbox software puts green checkboxes on the sync'ed folders and
files, but I feel like it sometimes gets behind, especially for a minute or
so after a reboot or sometimes after a crash, or if I shut down or put the
machine to "sleep" quickly after a save.

I just searched the Dropbox website, and despite the wording, I do not see
a status indicator on my Dropbox menu for Linux.

https://help.dropbox.com/sync/check-sync-status

For the machines I sync using Dropbox, when I suspect it has not
synchronized, I use the Dropbox menu to "Pause Syncing" wait a few seconds,
then "Resume Syncing" from the same menu. Judging by the hard drive
activity (on those machines having a rotational drive) I suspect that
procedure causes it to refresh its indexes and sync any missed files.
