For windows it will uninstall the old one before installing the new one. I recommend you, though, uninstall it manually, reboot, and then install the newer version.

If I download a new version and install it, does it uninstall the existing version first or overwrite it or do I need to do that?

You should first jump to latest version in 3 series release, then jump to latest version in 4 series release (I think it is 4.14) before finally jumping to latest 5 series release.

I bought a new computer with windows 11. I have been using v 3.8 for years on a windows 10 machine. If I install v 5.12 can I open a 3.8 data file or are there intermediate steps I should take?
