[GNC] upgrading from v 3.8 to v 5.12

For what it's worth, I have never done a manual uninstallation when
upgrading. I have GnuCash installed on Windows 10, Ubuntu, and MacOS 15.5.

But I have never jumped major versions; I tend to install versions as they
become available.
