Replying back, copying to the list so the observation might benefit others!

So there's a potential problem running under XFCE. If I get a chance soon
I'll fire up Debian with XFCE in a VM and test GnuCash there. In the
meantime, maybe others more savvy about such things might suggest a
workaround, or a test for when things work differently under different
desktop environments...

You could file a Debian bug... but it might help even more if you could see
it work correctly. If you have Gnome already installed somewhere you might
see how GnuCash performs there.
