We are NOT sure "you all have the same problem". What you all have is 
the same symptom (lock file problem)

In other words, there may be different reasons WHY the lock file is 
present when expected to be absent.

Using a "lock file" is a very common solution to control assignment of a 
resource in the situation of "multiple sequential users", ensuring that 
the resource is used by only one of the users at a time.

As alternative to "open anyway" is to explicitly delete the "lock file". 
But first make sure no other instance of gnucash in use AND you delete 
the correct "lock file". Like I said, a very common method so you 
probably have many apps creating lock files. That is a good reason to 
have a directory (file folder) for each set of gnucash books you keep 
AND nothing but gnucash stuff in that directory. The you can be sure 
which lock file.
