Please tell us more about your accounts.
Did you maintain all your accounts in a spreadsheet, export that to
csv and then try to import to Gnucash?
If I have guessed wrongly, please advise.

For people trying to import large amounts of data we often suggest not
importing more than a year's worth, and maintaining the old system for
looking back, doing comparisons.

Of course you think that if you have to check 600 transactions it is a
huge task, but it is not "impossible".
