James,
The process of roconciliation assumes that you have an external
statement against which you are going to reconcile your account. That
statement is usually provided by an external body, e.g. a bank and the
common practice is for a statement for an account to be prepared
between a specified opening date and closing date.
The statement will specify an opening balance (which should be equal to
the closing balance of the statement for the previous period)at the
opening date for the current statement period ( which should correspond
to the starting balance in the Reconcile dialog which is started from
the menu, Action->Reconcile, with the account register that you are
reconciling open), list all the transactions to the account in that
period.
The starting balance for a reconciliation is an automatically
calculated by GnuCash as the sum of all reconciled transactions prior
to the start date of the current period. If it is not equal to the
statement opening balance it indicates that a transaction prior to that
date is missing, added or not reconciled. The first step is therefor to
fix that problem and identify the transaction causing the problem. Once
you have found it, you will need to reconcile up to the starting date
and ensure the starting balance matches the opening balance.
If you are unable to find the problem, you can enter an adjusting
transaction prior to the starting date to make the balances equal and
complete the reconciliation to that date. At some later time you can
then continue the search for the problem and correct it.
Thenn enter the closing balance from the statement you are reconciling
into the Ending balance box and hit OK to start reconciling your
current statement.
