[GNC] New to XML; recreating some unsaved work

Not a specific gnucash problem though how to recover from it is a 
gnucash problem.

Horses and barn doors. Any/all of your applications are at risk from 
this sort of thing if you allow automatic updates to start regardless of 
what you are doing at the time. You should have some settings that 
change that. Instead of immediately running, have the computer notify 
you that it wants to run an update. That will give you a chance to close 
all running applications before you tell the update to run.
